The eHealth Initiative (eHI) established the Leadership in Global Health Technology (LIGHT) Initiative in 2004 to facilitate learning and information sharing among HIT innovators and other nations, in both the developed and developing world.
The LIGHT Initiative is sponsored by the eHealth Initiative Foundation and has received unrestricted educational grant funds from private sector sources including Booz Allen Hamilton, Computer Sciences Corporation and IDX Systems Corporation. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has also provided financial support to eHealth Initiative Foundation for a report summarizing barriers to and strategies for implementing health information technology and electronic connectivity to improve health and healthcare in a number of nations across the globe.
The eHI LIGHT initiative holds periodic summits and monthly Working Group meetings in Washington D.C. and around the globe to advance its mission.
The eHI LIGHT Initiative is intended to build on the tremendous success eHI has already achieved in driving high-level collaboration between the public and private sectors in the United States to increase momentum and drive policy change for HIT and health information exchange. The eHI LIGHT Initiative also leverages eHI’s established role - through its Connecting Communities for Better Health Program and other activities - as a leader in providing seed funding, technical support and pioneering expertise to communities engaging in electronic health information exchange projects.
