The eHI LIGHT initiative's purpose is to promote dialogue and the sharing of knowledge, resources and tools, between both developed and developing countries. The focus of these activities is to identify the key barriers, workable strategies and imperatives for implementing an interconnected, electronic health information infrastructure to support better health and healthcare. The eHI LIGHT initiative's action plan for achieving this goal includes:
- Promoting global dialogue on these issues.
- Building an international learning community around the creation of an interconnected, electronic health information infrastructure for clinical care, education, research and public health.
- Developing an inventory of HIT-related efforts of different countries across the globe.
- Determining international health information infrastructure needs and priorities and formulating consensus-based strategies to address those needs.
- Arranging site visits for global partners who are interested in learning from U.S. experts.
- Creating a global “whos who” directory designed to help those involved in HIT around the globe connect.
- Disseminating the results of LIGHT's international dialogue as widely as possible, as a basis for positive movement and policy change.
These activities utilize eHI’s overarching approach to driving change which is to engage the multiple, diverse stakeholders within healthcare to develop workable solutions for accelerating the adoption of HIT and an electronic health information infrastructure to support common quality, safety and efficiency goals.
